Marquette, MI – September 12, 2020 – The Marquette boys varsity soccer team traveled to Houghton Saturday for a wet and rainy game. Marquette had several chances early and finally got on the board with a Connor Johnson (senior) goal which was assisted by junior Axel Vermaat at the 10 minute mark. A few minutes later, senior Lewis Goff converted a penalty kick for a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Max Dawson made it 3-0 off a Brett Wittler (senior) pass. Just before halftime junior Nick Lindberg blasted in an unassisted goal from 18 yards out.
Marquette would add two second half goals to win the game 6-0. Those goals came from Johnson and junior Harrison Anthos; Johnson’s goal was assisted by Vermaat again while the Anthos goal was unassisted. Senior Liam Jeevar faced 3 shots in net.
“We were missing some key players today out with injuries and ended up losing 3 more during the game. The rest of the team rose to the occasion and took on longer shifts. Johnson really stepped it up and our defense is now riding a 4 game shut out streak. Very proud of these guys.” – coach Dan Salmon.
Marquette now stands at 4 wins 0 losses and 1 tie on the year outscoring the last four opponents 26-0. Marquette hosts Kingsford Thursday night.
